For many nonprofits, the fall brings one of the most important compliance dates of the year — the annual IRS filing deadline for the Form 990 series. Typically, the deadline is November 15, but in 2025, November 15 falls on a Saturday. That means the IRS automatically shifts the due date to the next business day: Monday, November 17, 2025.
Whether your organization has a December 31 or June 30 year-end, here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and protect your tax-exempt status.
December 31 Year-End Organizations
For nonprofits with a calendar year-end:
- November 17, 2025, is the final extended deadline to file Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, or 990-T for the 2024 tax year.
- If you filed Form 8868 for an automatic 6-month extension earlier in the year, this is your last chance to submit on time.
- Note: Form 990-N (the e-Postcard) does not allow extensions. Those filings should have already been completed earlier in the year.
June 30 Year-End Organizations
For nonprofits with a fiscal year ending June 30:
- November 17, 2025, is the original due date to file your Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, or 990-T for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.
- If you need additional time, you can file Form 8868 to request a 6-month extension.
What Nonprofits Should Do Now
To stay on track and avoid penalties, nonprofits should:
✔ Verify which form applies — Different 990 forms are required depending on revenue, assets, and organization type.
✔ Gather and reconcile financial data — Ensure your income, expenses, grants, and program details are accurate.
✔ Review governance policies and disclosures — Confirm your board and compliance records are up to date.
✔ File electronically — The IRS requires e-filing for all Form 990 series returns.
✔ Plan ahead — Don’t wait until the last minute; unexpected issues with platforms or missing documents can cause delays.
Why Timely Filing Matters
Filing on time is about more than avoiding penalties:
- IRS penalties for late filings can be steep and escalate quickly.
- Failure to file for three consecutive years will result in automatic revocation of tax-exempt status.
- The Form 990 is a public document that donors, grantmakers, and watchdogs use to assess your transparency and accountability. Filing on time protects your reputation as much as your tax status.
